Abstract:
I will review current ideas on how interaural time differences are neuronally represented at the level of the first binaural coincidence detector stage, the medial superior olive (MSO). The talk will address this problem both from the coding and the mechanstic perspective laying particular emphasis on the origin of characteristic phases. Finally, I will present some unpublished results on ITD coding in the context of ambient spatial sounds and argue that our perception of acoustic space is not absolute.
