Abstract:
This talk is not about hearing impairment but how hearing can fill in when vision is impaired. Imaging space with echolocation is a real challenge because our auditory system is really bad at space. While humans have reasonably good spatial acuity, their spatial auditory resolution, i.e. to resolve simultaneously active sound sources in space, is very limited.

I will report on recent work looking at how humans can exploit echoes of self generated sounds to assess space around them, how this assessment contrasts to the well-known echo suppression in humans and how echolocation is supported by self motion.
