Abstract:
=From Sniffing in order to Smell and on to Sniffing to Drive Electric Wheelchairs=

Sniffs are complex sensory-motor reactions that are constantly modulated in order to account for olfactory content. After characterizing psychophysical aspects of sniffing, and brain circuits that subserve sniffing, we hypothesized that sniffing would remain highly conserved after severe brain injury. With this in mind, we built a set of sniff-controlled devices, and found that locked-in individuals could use these devices to write text, and paraplegic individuals could use these devices to drive electric wheelchairs.
