Abstract:
Interoception refers to the awareness of internal bodily states. Early work explored interoception as a purley bottom-up, sensory driven phenomenon. Recent theoretical frameworks, however, conceptualise the generation of internal awareness as a top-down, prediction driven state, which is achieved by comparing sensory-autonomic feedback to foregone predictions based on past experiences. Using EEG we explored the contributions of predictive coding to interoception across various experiments. Finally, we also developed a link between internal and external sensory perception by exploring the way interoceptive states influence the ability to act within the outer environment.
