Abstract:
The story of the bionic eye has captured headlines and provided the prospect of improved quality of life for patients with degenerative vision loss. Last year the Bionic Vision Australia research group carried out the successful implantation of three patients with an early prototype retinal implant. In this seminar an overview of this research program will be presented, looking at the potential benefits for patients and how this technology will develop into the future, with a focus upon the scientific challenges that will need to be overcome to make this clinically and commercially successful.
