Abstract:
The vestibular system, also known as our sixth sense, provides essential information for higher order cognitive processes such as referencing in peripersonal space, graviception, navigation and self-motion detection. Contrary to most other human systems (e.g. the motor, auditory, somatosensory and visual system) a primary cortex has not yet been defined for central vestibular representations. The lecture will focus on prominent cortical nodes in the vestibular network, mechanisms of plasticity in the event of a periperal vestibular disease and hemispheric dominance-patterns due to vestibular stimulation.
