Title: Fusing Conventional and Robotic Rehabilitation Therapy

Host: Joachim Hermsdörfer

Abstract:

Robot-assisted arm therapy is increasingly applied in neurorehabilitation. The reason for this development over the last decades was that robots relieve the therapist from hard physical work while the training intensity can be increased in a gamified environment.
However, robots can’t support the patient the way a therapist would. Therefore, the robot would need to learn from the manual interaction between therapist and patient.
Currently, manual therapist-patient interaction during robot-assisted rehabilitation is disturbed by the robot. Therapists and patients are not able to feel each other and the therapist has only rudimentary ways to adapt the robotic support i.e. via a PC interface.
In this talk, I will show current limitations of robotic rehabilitation and present solution approaches for enabling more personalized and more intensive robot-assisted arm therapy.
