Title: Ways to improve multitasking

Location:

Abstract:
Typically, the processing of dual tasks (and generally multitasking) is associated with dual task costs. One explanation for the occurrence of these costs is that certain units in the processing of tasks cannot be executed in parallel, but only one after the other – the so called bottleneck. If - as is typical for dual tasks - two processes arrive at this processing unit almost simultaneously, only one process can be executed, and the other process has to wait in line.
In our research project, we investigate two ways to reduce these dual task costs. First, we manipulate the predictability of the tasks. The rationale is that these tasks can be processed whenever the bottleneck is free, thus reducing the dual task costs. The other idea is that by the integration of the two tasks, they are combined into a single task and thus no dual task cost is incurred. The results of the experiments will be presented in the colloquium.
