Abstract:
Abstract:
Anhedonia, a core symptom of depression, is characterised by impairments in motivation and is poorly targeted by existing treatments. In this talk, I will present data from the LIFE trial investigating the impact of a physical activity intervention on anhedonia and its underlying cognitive mechanisms. Using a combination of self-report measures, behaviour on an effort based decision making task, and functional MRI, the study examines how physical activity relates to multiple components of reward processing, including sensitivity to reward and willingness to exert effort. I will outline a mechanistic framework in which physical activity may influence motivational processes via modulation of reward-related neural systems. The implications of this work will be discussed in the context of identifying targeted interventions for depression, particularly for individuals presenting with motivational symptoms.
