Abstract:
Our daily life permanently requires us to make decisions, for example how much mental effort we are willing to invest for writing a scientific article. Enduring mental effort leads to the feeling of fatigue, which reduces the motivation to engage in further effortful activities. In my talk, I will present current research on the causal neural mechanisms underlying the motivation and execution of mental effort as well as effort-induced motivational fatigue. In the presented studies, we combined neuroimaging (fMRI and spectroscopy) with non-invasive brain stimulation, including also novel temporal interference stimulation protocols that allow targeting subcortical brain regions. Together, the current findings contribute to deepening our understanding of the biological basis of mental effort and fatigue in health and clinical disorders.
