Abstract:
Mobility has been termed the sixth vital sign because of its ability to predict critical health outcomes in later life. To date, there is no consensus on how mobility should best be measured, but recent advances in sensor technology have led to the increasing use of wearable sensors to derive real-world digital mobility outcomes (DMOs). The first part of this talk presents the approach to measuring real-world mobility, particularly walking, developed by the Mobilise-D consortium, including results on data aggregation, measurement duration, validity, and sensitivity to change in four clinical cohorts. The second part presents findings on DMOs from further clinical and non-clinical populations. Finally, the talk takes a critical look at why a thorough understanding of real-world mobility requires more than the mere application of sensors, and proposes ways to address these limitations.
