Abstract:
Using 128-channel extracellular recordings from up to 74 neurons simultaneously we recently described temporally precise sensory evoked spike sequences in adult rat barrel cortex in vivo (Reyes-Puerta et al., Cerebral Cortex, 2014). Although these spike sequences were regularly led by inhibitory interneurons in layer 4 of the activated whisker-related column, the subsequent activity pattern was scattered in different layers and neighboring columns. Using computational analyses the role of inhibitory and excitatory neurons in cortical sensory processing will be discussed.
