Abstract:
An ideal sound localization system should estimate the spatial location of a sound source independently of non-spatial properties of sounds (e.g. level, spectrum). However, this is not the case of all models of sound localization. First, I will point out some elements of ecological acoustics that make such invariance a non-trivial constraint. Second, I will review psychophysical evidence about invariance to non-spatial properties in sound localization behavior. Third, I will evaluate some of the current models of sound localization with respect to invariance, focusing on interaural time differences.
