Abstract:
Age-related variation of learning visuo-motor transformations

Mechanical tools such as levers or electronic tools such as computer mice implement visuo-motor transformations, novel relations between movements of the hand and the effective part of the tool (tip of the lever, cursor). Different components of learning such transformations can be distinguished, in particular parameter tuning of the closed-loop controller and improvement of open-loop control by means of the acquisition of an internal model of the transformation and of explicit knowledge that enables strategic corrections. With sufficiently complex visuo-motor transformations, learning has been found to be poorer at older adult age. Several findings indicate that it is the acquisition of explicit knowledge that declines. This decline is remarkably robust across various task variations. With pre-training of explicit knowledge, older adults even tend to forget it during subsequent movements and/or to make less use of it than young adults. Underlying the particular age-related variation of explicit learning seems to be a reduced awareness of the discrepancy between movements of the hand and of the effective part of the tool, e. g., of a cursor on a monitor.
