Abstract:
Fast oscillations in the hippocampus reflect synchronized neuronal activity and are believed to play a crucial role in memory consolidation. The major output area of the hippocampus is the subiculum. It comprises two pyramidal cells types that differ both in their output mode and in their respective target areas. It is as yet unclear how the subiculum is integrating incoming information and distributing it to its various cortical and subcortical targets. Here we show that burst firing cells are activated during hippocampal fast oscillations whereas regular firing cells are deactivated. Further, we demonstrate that the differential embedding emerges from the intrinsic network of the subiculum that favors excitatory input onto burst firing neurons and inhibitory input onto regular firing cells. Our results demonstrate a functional dichotomy of pyramidal cells during fast oscillations. We provide evidence that the subiculum is not a mere relay station from the hippocampus to the neocortex but actively contributes to information processing and routing.
