Abstract:
According to the usual textbook explanation, the resting potential is a consequence of the Nernst potential ensuing from existing concentration differences of various ions, with the action of sodium-potassium pumps somewhere in the background so as to keep the main concentration differences intact. In contrast, we will present a direct explanation of the resting potential in terms of ion pumping. Consequently the pumping of potassium ions has a negligible effect on the magnitude of the resting potential.
