Abstract:
Abstract: Our perceptions, decisions, and actions are embodied within our living world. The embodied perspective anticipates a rich web of interactions between the brain and the homeostatic body, such that information processing is contextualized by homeostatic and allostatic rhythms. Chief among these are interoceptive mechanisms by which the brain and body are linked in a self-perceiving organism. In this talk, I will review new directions in interoception research, spanning the development of psychometric, computational, and causal-based approaches. This research paradigm seeks to improve how we measure interoception in order to better quantify disorders of affect and consciousness, to identify causal pathways linking brain and body, and ultimately to derive new targets for embodied interventions.
