Abstract:
Abstract: People with schizophrenia (SZ) often experience less drive to pursue rewards or goals relative to those without psychosis. Dr. John Purcell’s research leverages various methodologies to understand the contributions of two adjacent systems essential to motivational processes and decision-making in people with psychosis: 1) positive valence systems subserving maladaptive reward pursuit; and 2) the cognitive role of uncertainty and risk perception in forming expectancies or beliefs that influence behavior. His work aims to characterize disruptions in these processes at the behavioral level while identifying associated aberrations within regions and circuits of the brain (e.g., striatum, insula, anterior cingulate cortex). In this talk, he presents findings suggesting that people with SZ have less ability to use previous rewarding experiences to forecast future rewards, impaired perception of risk-relevant information, and differences in how beliefs about uncertainty inform decision-making.
